Interview with Valentin Dillenschneider – Co-Founder of RedE Scooter

For this first startup interview, we have chosen to present RedE Scooter and its co-founder Valentin Dillenschneider.

Why RedE Scooter?

After several years of monitoring the sector, we are observing a first strong trend: the return to industrial innovations.

Indeed, after several years of almost exclusively digital innovations, we are currently seeing a rebalancing in favor of innovations in the world of vehicles, machine tools and even robotics.

RedE Scooter is a perfect example of this trend, hence this spotlight!

SprintProject: Valentin, what is the story of RedE Scooter?

My partner and I met at the end of our engineering studies. I was passionate about 2 wheels, Etienne (Mao – co-founder), passionate about mechanics, that’s how we got to know each other. After a lot of tinkering and traveling, we became interested in 2 electric wheels and quickly realized that there was no (anymore) French brand developing electric scooters. It is this observation which is at the origin of the creation of RedE Scooter in 2015.

Based on this observation, we carried out a market study, the results not only convinced us of the market potential but also of the future needs linked to the explosion of urban delivery.

After an initial financing of €280k from pole capital, we were able to finalize the development and launch the production of a first series of the v1 of our scooter.

SprintProject: What about today?

Several years have passed, we have learned a lot and developed a v2.

These scooters are produced and pre-assembled in China, then we finalize the assembly in France in our workshop in Montrouge (92).

We have developed a real partnership with our Chinese partners and my partner lives there for a large part of the year to ensure quality control and technical development.

We operate in 4 market segments: foodtech / express messaging / intermediaries and institutions.

Our customers have 2 acquisition options, either they buy their scooters or they rent them. Then they pay a subscription for maintenance.

Currently, every 1.5 months, we have 72 scooters arriving in France.

SprintProject:What is the future of RedE Scooter?

Building on our initial successes, we have formed a team divided between our headquarters in Nancy, the assembly workshop in Montrouge and China.

At the same time, we are in the process of raising funds to accelerate our development and take advantage of the market opportunity. We estimate that this market is around 12,000 vehicles per year and quite few players are actually operating in it at the moment.

Between now and September, our volumes will triple. We anticipate the sale of 400 units this year, 1,200 units in 2019, then 10,000 in 2020.

SprintProject: This interview with Valentin clearly demonstrates the dynamics of industrial innovation in the supply chain sector. RedE Scooter is a startup to follow and that’s what we are going to do.

See you in 15 days for a new interview
