Sogaris, IFSTTAR and the University of Paris-Est Marne-La-Vallée are launching “Logistics City”, a Research Chair in Urban Logistics. SprintProject, as a player committed to Supply Chain Innovation and in particular Urban Logistics supports the approach!

In just a few years, logistics and the city have experienced major upheavals: warehouses have moved away from urban centers and goods are circulating in increasing numbers near offices and homes. It is clear that in parallel with these changes, the needs in urban logistics have also evolved with the gradual transition to clean vehicles and especially the development of a new market of urban warehouses integrated into the city and effectively connected to major centers. logistics.

The “Logistics City” Chair

For Jonathan Sebanne, Managing Director of Sogaris, this (r)evolution of real estate " poorly known " is however " central to the competitiveness of large cities ".

While a body of research is being formed in France and around the world on new urban logistics born from economic and technological transformations, the “Logistics City” Chair, supported by IFSTTAR, Sogaris and the University of Paris-Est Marne- Since the summer of 2019, La-Vallée has brought a new approach, combining operational empiricism and scientific knowledge, capable of enriching the way of understanding the connection between logistics, real estate and urban planning.

Centered on the Ile-de-France region, in a comparative perspective and by putting it into perspective with real estate trends observed internationally, the Logistics City chair has a double ambition according to Laetitia Dablanc, researcher and Director of the Logistics City Chair, University of Paris- East / IFSTTAR: “Pay particular attention, especially through the disciplines of town planning and development, to the question of crucial logistical locations for urban and metropolitan environments which are warehouses; and explore the impact on urban logistics and territories of new consumption and distribution trends, particularly those linked to e-commerce and more generally to digital transformations."

With this Chair, Sogaris, IFSTTAR and the University of Paris-Est Marne-La-Vallée wish to increase academic knowledge while ensuring that operational methodological tools are provided to public and private actors in urban logistics working on mobility, urban planning, economic development and the environment.

Research axes and Program

The 2 scientific axes

Two lines of research are proposed: the first focus on urban and peri-urban logistics real estate; the second on trends and new consumption practices and their impact on urban logistics and its real estate.

Axis n°1 – urban and peri-urban logistics real estate

This thematic axis aims to analyze the interactions between developments in logistics real estate and the city. It is based on the analysis of the relationships between socio-economic indicators and logistics real estate in around thirty large cities around the world.

Axis n°2 – trends and new practices in consumption, production, distribution and their impact on urban logistics and warehousing.

This axis aims to improve knowledge of new practices (in particular linked to e-commerce and its recent variations) and to estimate their potential impact on the city, on urban delivery and on logistics real estate.

The program

Launched in the summer of 2019 by Sogaris, IFSTTAR and the University of Paris-Est Marne-La-Vallée, the Logistics City Chair has just published a first White Paper providing an inventory of knowledge relating to the emergence of urban logistics, and presenting the scientific program of the chair as recommendations.

Each year, a new publication will be published on the progress of research along the two axes previously mentioned.

To join the Logistics City Chair

For the year 2020, in line with the ambition to combine scientific knowledge and operational empiricism, the partners of the Logistics City Chair wish to open the round table to operational stakeholders, in order to enrich and accelerate the implementation of the scientific program.
