Can you briefly tell us the story of your startup?

We are four passionate partners (Didier Livio, Thierry Laval, Frédéric Volle and myself), with our experience working with many agri-food and wine companies in implementing their CSR strategy. In September 2022, we created Foodpilot to bridge the gap between strategic ambitions and concrete sustainability results that we had experienced during our career.

Our digital platform responds to major challenges of the industry: adaptation to climate change, new consumer expectations and compliance with increasingly strict regulations.

Foodpilot offers an all-in-one solution that allows you to effectively manage the CSR strategy and environmental footprint of each product, from farm to plate, on specific and verified data. We offer three key tools: automated data collection, precise measurement of impacts whether environmental, social or economic and optimization via powerful AI. Our AI does not just flag gaps; it provides concrete action plans to improve sustainability across the entire value chain, even in the event of missing data.

Our mission? To accelerate the transition to a more sustainable agri-food industry while simplifying the lives of businesses.

How did you end up working with a large group or a start-up on an Open Innovation project?

At Foodpilot, we firmly believe that innovation is born from collaboration. To achieve sustainability goals, it is essential to work in an ecosystem. It is in this spirit that we have been led to collaborate with agri-food companies or technical organizations through open innovation projects. Foodpilot is an open digital solution, designed to be enriched by the most advanced expertise in each segment of the value chain.

For example, we have collaborated on the pork sector, with the French Technical Institute of Pork (IFIP) and several players in the sector (for example Aoste) to co-construct models and tools to assess environmental impacts combining our know-how in automated data collection, with their sector expertise.

This project not only made it possible to effectively address their sustainability challenges, but also to create a virtuous synergy that amplified the impact of our solution. By integrating complementary solutions, we were able to accelerate the adoption of sustainable practices on a large scale, while providing a holistic view of the value chain.

This collaboration has reinforced our conviction that open innovation and collaborative ecosystems are key levers to push the boundaries of innovation and generate sustainable impact. We remain open to any similar initiative, whether with large companies or organizations looking for disruptive solutions.

What were the main challenges you encountered when working with a third party (major groups, start-ups, universities, labs) and how did you overcome them?

In our collaborations with various actors – whether large groups, other start-ups or technical organizations – we have encountered two major challenges.

The first challenge was time management. The time frame of a large group is often very different from that of a start-up. Decision-making processes can be longer in large organizations, while start-ups, on the contrary, are oriented towards rapid iterations. To overcome this gap, we set up clear project milestones, with regular synchronization points. This allowed us to keep everyone aligned, while remaining agile to adapt to the needs of the partner. Thanks to this approach, we were able to move forward efficiently while respecting the time constraints of each actor.

The second challenge was building trust. Working with a very established player can sometimes generate a feeling of imbalance, especially when you are a young company. To overcome this, we made it a point of honor to quickly demonstrate our expertise and deliver tangible results from the early stages of the project. We also favored total transparency in our exchanges, by sharing our progress, our uncertainties or our difficulties and by requesting feedback from our partners as soon as necessary. This transparency was key to establishing a climate of trust and making the partnership a space for co-construction.

Finally, another common challenge is the compatibility of tools and systems. To solve this point, we designed Foodpilot as an open solution, able to easily integrate into different technological environments.

According to you, what are the major advantages of Open Innovation for a start-up?

Open innovation offers many perks for a start-up. The first major advantage lies in access to complementary resources and skills. Collaborating with institutions such as IFIP has allowed us to benefit from technical expertise to refine our models and obtain scientific validation.

Then, open innovation promotes the acceleration of the development of solutions. By relying on its ecosystem, a start-up can test its ideas more quickly, refine its developments and access larger markets, while reducing the costs and risks associated with innovation.

In addition, this approach strengthens the legitimacy and credibility of the start-up. Being associated with a large group or a recognized player allows it to gain visibility and convince new customers. It is an excellent opportunity to prove the value of its solutions on the ground, through concrete projects.

Finally, working in an ecosystem allows a start-up to co-construct more robust solutions by benefiting from feedback from experienced partners.

In my opinion, open innovation allows a start-up to develop more quickly, more efficiently and to establish itself as a key player in its sector, while maximizing its impact by collaborating with other stakeholders.

How did this collaboration influence the development of your product/service?

Collaboration with our partners, whether large groups, technical institutes or other start-ups, has had a significant impact on the development of Foodpilot. Working hand in hand with stakeholders with varied challenges has allowed us to design features more quickly, directly responding to their needs. For example, following feedback from our partners, we have developed an even more simplified data collection, while maintaining the scientific rigor necessary to measure the environmental footprint of products.

This collaboration has also influenced our product approach by pushing us to adapt our solution to complex environments. By integrating diverse technological systems and respecting the regulatory constraints specific to each sector, we have evolved Foodpilot to become an even more robust, flexible and interoperable platform.

Another key point was the optimization of our AI. Exchanges with industry experts allowed us to refine our algorithms to offer more relevant recommendations and more targeted action plans. This ability to adjust quickly and learn from our partners’ feedback reinforced the value of our solution.

Finally, this collaboration has consolidated our network of partners, creating an ecosystem where everyone contributes to the continuous improvement of Foodpilot. This collaboration has been a real catalyst for innovation for us, so that foodpilot becomes a more complete, more relevant and more efficient solution.

What advice would you give to other start-ups that are thinking of getting involved in an Open Innovation project?

I don't consider myself to have experienced many open innovation projects with Foodpilot, but I have a few tips based on our experience.

Choosing the right partner: not an easy but essential exercise. Look for partners who share your vision and values. Make sure the collaboration objective is clear to all parties at the outset and do not hesitate, during the process, to ensure that the objective is always well shared. Strategic alignment from the start is crucial to avoid divergences and maximize synergies.

Be ready to learn and adapt: Open innovation is based on a constant exchange of know-how. Stay open to feedback, even if it seems to go against your convictions.

Building a relationship of trust: be transparent about your goals, your abilities and don’t hesitate to talk about your limits. Don’t be afraid to share your uncertainties either.

Be flexible in time management: In an Open Innovation project, not everyone has the same pace. You have to accept this gap and juggle between the speed expectations of a start-up and the longer processes of large companies.

And finally, don't lose sight of your vision: It’s easy to get overwhelmed by the demands of a shared project. I encourage you to keep your startup’s mission in mind!

In summary, I would say that succeeding in an open innovation project requires listening, a lot of flexibility, and a constant desire to learn… all while remaining true to one's vision.

What are the future prospects for your startup after this collaboration?

Following this successful collaboration, we are resolutely turning towards the international market. Building on the experience acquired and the results obtained with our clients in this sector, we plan to deploy our expert solution in the pork sector in new markets, targeting primarily major producing countries such as Spain and Poland.

These countries, where the pork industry plays a central role, are facing increasingly pressing environmental and traceability issues. Our platform, which has already been tested and validated on ambitious projects thanks to this collaboration, is perfectly suited to address these specific issues. We therefore wish to capitalize on this expertise to support local stakeholders in improving the sustainability of their practices, from breeding to processing.

We plan to establish strategic partnerships with professional associations and local companies in order to adapt our solution to the emission factors and regulations of each country. By relying on the feedback from our first customers, we will be able to further refine our offer and thus become a reference player on the European scene.

Do you have any projects in progress with other actors?

Yes, we currently have other projects underway with stakeholders in the dairy and wine sectors. In the dairy sector, we are working with a dairy cooperative to optimize carbon footprint management and improve product traceability, while integrating animal welfare indicators.

At the same time, we work with winegrowers to measure the carbon impact of their winegrowing practices and identify levers for improvement. These collaborations allow us to adapt our solution to the specificities of each sector, while meeting local requirements and new consumer expectations in terms of sustainability.

We remain open to other partnerships in these sectors, with the aim of accelerating the environmental transition on an international scale by relying on concrete and innovative projects.

Read all the « Expert Opinion » articles on the SprintProject blog

Who are you?
