A flexible and efficient logistics chain has become an undeniable strategic advantage. In response to this demand, companies are seeking tools capable of optimizing their processes and guiding them toward decisions that improve operational efficiency and customer satisfaction, while reducing economic and environmental costs. In this quest, new technologies, and particularly Artificial Intelligence (AI), play a central role.

AI: a tool for automation and decision support in logistics

AI stands out for its ability to analyze and correlate data to imitate human thinking and action. Unlike other technologies, AI can improve its own performance using machine learning and deep learning methods. This capability allows AI to automate tasks and assist humans in decision-making.

In the logistics context, Artificial Intelligence becomes a valuable tool for:

Low-value or repetitive tasks, such as sorting and arranging small parts, where AI automation enables quick and error-free execution.

High-value or complex tasks, where AI becomes a real decision support tool by providing information and performing complex calculations to support human decisions.

From inventory automation to optimizing delivery routes, to order preparation and transport visibility, artificial intelligence offers a multitude of use cases.

For example, using drones equipped with onboard cameras powered by AI allows precise verification of warehouse inventories. This results in reduced errors, accelerated inventory processes, lower operational costs, and improved employee safety, as they are no longer required to work at heights. This automation can be performed regularly without immobilizing the warehouse for long periods.

Generative AI: a new era of optimization and innovation for the supply chain

In recent years, generative AI (or GenAI) has become a hot topic and a true innovation driver for companies in the logistics sector. A recent Gartner survey reveals that half of the surveyed supply chain managers plan to implement Generative AI within the next 12 months. Moreover, 14% of them have already started implementing this type of project. This shows a real awareness of the potential of this technology in the industry.

Generative AI can autonomously create new content, such as images, texts, sounds, or videos. Unlike traditional AI designed to solve specific problems, generative AI can produce entirely new and realistic data that has not been explicitly programmed in advance.

In the supply chain sector, generative AI can be applied in various ways to solve complex problems and anticipate future needs:

Demand forecasting: By analyzing large volumes of historical sales data, market trends, and other key factors, AI can model real-time changes in customer demand. Based on this, generative AI can then create optimized scenarios to accurately adjust inventory levels, production schedules, and distribution plans.

Risk management : Generative AI systems allow companies to proactively identify and model potential risks to their supply chain by analyzing massive data from multiple sources. Beyond predictive analysis, generative AI adds decisive value by generating, on demand, detailed risk assessments, crisis scenario simulations, and customized risk mitigation strategies.

Supplier selection: Generative AI represents a valuable asset for optimizing the supplier selection and evaluation process. By ingesting and analyzing massive data on past performance, technical capabilities, cost structure, and risk profiles of potential suppliers, generative AI algorithms can provide informed recommendations.

Last mile optimization revolutionized by AI

Among all stages of the supply chain, last-mile delivery crystallizes the most significant operational and financial challenges for logistics players. It can represent up to half of the delivery costs! AI and generative AI thus have a crucial role in optimizing last-mile performance. At the heart of route planning and optimization solutions, they enable logistics players to achieve numerous benefits: better productivity, reduced miles traveled, costs, and CO2 emissions...

For nearly 10 years, Kardinal's teams have been developing an optimization engine based on operational research and machine learning techniques. Based on mathematical models, statistics, and optimization algorithms, operational research is a branch of artificial intelligence dedicated to optimal decision-making. Its goal is to identify the best possible solution to complex problems by analyzing multiple scenarios and considering sometimes contradictory constraints.

The AI integrated into Kardinal's solutions relies on numerous data - such as volume history or predictive and real-time traffic - to generate optimized transport plans. We use machine learning to refine our predictions with data collected in the field and to identify emerging problems and estimate their consequences.

For example, for a carrier delivering B2B and B2C parcels with variable delivery times, Kardinal's algorithms collect field data (travel time, arrival/departure) via the drivers' mobile app. This data is then cross-referenced with multiple variables that can impact delivery times (parcel size/weight, floor, area, customer type, etc.). Machine learning algorithms automatically identify underlying patterns to accurately model delivery time based on context. This allows optimizing routes by setting tailored durations for each delivery point, rather than a single average value. Continuous accumulation of field data refines the prediction of delivery times, thus iteratively improving optimization.

Based on AI, Kardinal's route optimization solution operates continuously: before (predictive calculations), during (real-time handling of contingencies), and after (refining future predictions) the route execution for optimization closer to field reality. Combined with operational research and machine learning techniques, generative AI propels logistics towards greater agility, efficiency, and sustainability, providing a decisive competitive advantage to companies.

Learn more: https://kardinal.ai/

Read all the « Expert Opinion » articles on the SprintProject blog

In an increasingly competitive market, the digital transformation of the supply chain is proving to be one of the most crucial challenges for players in the sector.
