For example, they had to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Adapt to stricter regulations to make roads safer;<\/li>\n<li>Make significant investments to reduce the environmental impact of transport and meet lower emissions standards;<\/li>\n<li>Optimize operations as much as possible, in order to remain competitive in an industry where margins and barriers to entry are extremely low;<\/li>\n<li>Adapt to regional disparities which mean that the price of labor can be very different from one country to another<\/li>\n<li>Integrate online commerce, which now represents a significant part of transport needs and whose growth seems irresistible for many years to come.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And if all of these challenges weren&#039;t already difficult enough to deal with, talking to any carrier you quickly learn that they have been dealing with a much more difficult and unbearable problem for many years.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A structural shortage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>So what is this problem that prevents transporters from sleeping at night?<\/p>\n<p>The biggest problem they faced until very recently was the shortage of drivers.<\/p>\n<p>According to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/poleemploi_HDF\/status\/1117748984444067840\">\"P\u00f4le Emploi\"<\/a>, truck drivers are among the 10 most sought-after professions in France in 2019. \u201cEurope, and particularly France, has a shortage of truck drivers. Too much time spent away from home, constant monitoring by GPS, stress to ensure delivery time, <strong>truck transport no longer attracts young French people<\/strong>&quot;, according to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/fr\/podcasts\/20200321-crise-vocations-transporteurs-routiers-poids-lourds\">this article published on RFI<\/a>. I would add competition with VTCs to this list. Indeed, young people interested in driving have the opportunity to follow a short training course and install one of the applications allowing them to practice this profession. They can then work with complete freedom and flexibility, at the times they define for themselves, and know that they will return home in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, the combination of the inverted age pyramid - approximately 50% of drivers are over 50 years old - with the disinterest of young people means that the current shortage is not temporary but structural, and that the imbalance will probably worsen in the years future.<\/p>\n<p>Thus, \u201cby 2022, the transport and logistics sector, which represents 1.6 million jobs in France, will need to replace 457,000 employees who will retire, while at the same time the sector plans to create 83,000 additional jobs. <strong>There will therefore be 540,000 positions to be filled, including 223,000 for road drivers.<\/strong>, according to the study <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strategie.gouv.fr\/sites\/strategie.gouv.fr\/files\/atoms\/files\/fs_rapport_metiers_en_2022_27042015_final.pdf\">Jobs in 2022<\/a> of France Strat\u00e9gie\u201d.1<\/p>\n<p>1 \u2013 source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transportinfo.fr\/special-recrutement-le-transport-face-a-la-penurie-de-conducteurs\/\">article published on transportinfo.fr<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Inextensible capacity and just-in-time operations<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Of all the challenges discussed, it is relatively clear that the driver shortage is the most difficult to address and also the one with the greatest impact on the transportation industry. In fact, it imposes itself on carriers as a major limiting factor, because it blocks any possibility of increasing capacity. It thus forces transporters to operate in tight flow, and with a very small margin of error. This is how one of the transporters with whom we work explained to us that their fleet of tractors rotates entirely every 3 years, because beyond 3 years, the probability of breakdown increases and knowing that any breakdown creates a major impact in their operations.<\/p>\n<p>This is why we decided, at Konboi One, to focus on products aimed at logistics and goods transport companies.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>A solution that is emerging<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Our deeply rooted experience in industrial robotics and autonomous vehicles naturally guided us towards a product combining the latest advances in robotics and artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>We then imagined several solutions and approaches that would all be useful for this industry:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Industrial mobile robots \/ AGV<\/li>\n<li>Autonomous forklifts<\/li>\n<li>Autonomous fleet tractors \/ autonomous platform tractors<\/li>\n<li>Autonomous tractors for goods\/freight transportation<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Autonomous trucks for freight<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>And after having studied their technical feasibility, as well as their potential impact, our choice fell towards autonomous tractors for freight. They seemed to us to be a unique opportunity to develop a product that would have a massive impact on the sector and yet, until now, had not been the subject of much investment in Europe.<\/p>\n<p>However, the advantages of autonomous trucks are multiple:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>They don&#039;t get tired and don&#039;t need to rest every two hours...<\/li>\n<li>\u2026which also allows them to reduce transport times.<\/li>\n<li>They don&#039;t text while driving, and can communicate at high speed without any risk.<\/li>\n<li>They reduce fuel consumption by around 10%<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But the most important advantage cited by our customers and partners is that the deployment of our autonomous tractors allows them above all to free up rare and high value-added resources - drivers - from simple and basic tasks such as driving on the highway, for reallocate them to complex and high value-added tasks, such as deliveries in urban areas.<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"translation-block\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sprint-project.com\/en\/category\/avis-dexpert\/\" target=\"_self\">Read all the \u201cExpert Opinion\u201d articles on the Sprint<em>Project<\/em> blog<\/a><\/p>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Industry with Many Challenges Carriers and logisticians have successfully met many challenges in recent years.
