Most often, they use specialized transport companies. They manage supply chains of thousands of tons of products each year. It is therefore essential to guarantee compliance with the cold chain throughout logistics. The food industry needs to guarantee tracking of large quantities of products, transported by pallets. Connected monitoring of loads will allow them to justify compliance with the cold chain to health authorities. Pharmaceutical laboratories will favor monitoring as close as possible to the product, over shorter circuits. They will have to measure the temperature of biotechnologies so as not to alter the results of their research. Analysis laboratories (biomedical, food, etc.) are faced with the same challenge of transparency and traceability.

Supply Chain is a field of activity that brings together numerous services for retail companies. Today, new players are entering the innovation market. Since the arrival of digitalization, logistics has seen its processes change. Most often, for the improvement of the services offered and simplification for professionals. The cosmetics sector is concerned for the active ingredients it uses in its products. More generally, all consumer products are concerned, from their production, through processing, to their consumption. Whether they are stored or transported, their maintenance is essential. The common goal is to guarantee viability and a certain quality despite the constraints they face. The professions linked to these issues face a growing problem of traceability. Quality and logistics managers for brands and carriers must innovate and offer sustainable improvement solutions for the company and this can quickly become a headache.

A common problem and major challenges

The first issue is health, with respecting conservation conditions during the transport and storage of processed or unprocessed foods. The same goes for biological analysis laboratories (water and agri-food). They must demonstrate monitoring of the cold chain, in order not to alter the samples and guarantee the results of their research to customers.

Beyond the credibility of the establishments and companies concerned, each must meet constantly evolving standards and regulations.

All these sectors face increasingly complex distribution chains, which is accentuated by rapid international trade. Logistics has been undergoing digital transformation for several years. Innovations in the field tend to improve processes for the various players in the Supply Chain.

Traceability means that we are able to follow the progress of a product at each key stage, in real time, thanks to a preventive solution, making it possible to act in the event of a failure. If traceability is automated, it will help avoid human errors and the loss of essential data.

From a technical point of view, it involves monitoring the quantity and quality of the product in real time, from packaging to transport to storage.

The systematic association of data flows will make it possible to know the progress and status at a given moment. Logistics is a major upstream or downstream issue for manufacturers, transporters and authorities. The company must be able to trace the exact origin, real-time location and characteristics of the product by maintaining a reliable data history. We then speak of “Tracking” and “Tracing”. These processes require the implementation of reliable and secure technologies such as Bluetooth which, combined with the cellular network, will be able to provide the real-time connectivity sought by manufacturers. Then, the use of a web application or software will make it possible to use the data collected and generate reports to optimize processes.

Standards and regulations

For any activity, standards and regulations make it possible to supervise, monitor and sanction, if necessary.

The logistics of goods and services is divided into supply logistics, manufacturing systems, and distribution. Supply logistics involves managing the acquisition of materials and services that the industry needs. The manufacturing line involves managing the goods in production and handling. Distribution logistics is the supply chain of distributors, wholesalers, etc. These are finished products, ready for sale (retail or not). Conditioning and packaging are an integral part of this logistics. They must respect strict regulations depending on the nature and method of consumption.

Order preparation and the type of carrier will sometimes determine the overpackaging of the product. However, suitable packaging is not sufficient to guarantee that the temperature of what it contains is respected. Indeed, temperature monitoring throughout the entire logistics chain must demonstrate that no break in the cold chain is to be deplored. Otherwise, these are products which will be thrown away or placed in quarantine while waiting to know if they can re-enter the circuit. Today the standards govern the packaging and the means of transport. But, they tend to get tougher when it comes to temperature monitoring. The EASA* recommends consistent temperature monitoring, even in refrigerators. Tomorrow, all products will need to be monitored while avoiding waste thanks to preventive technology. Packaging is highly regulated and monitoring during transport and during storage also tends to become stricter. In particular, to fight against food fraud which affects the authenticity of certain products.

* European Food Safety Authority

The logistics of tomorrow

We see that the cold chain is a sensitive area of the Supply Chain. It represents significant challenges and risks, but not insurmountable. Many solutions are put in place to control the cold chain. For manufacturers, distributors, transporters, warehouses and healthcare establishments. There are many innovations to improve last mile deliveries (for example).

Nowadays, any goods company must provide impeccable associated service. In particular to anticipate, control and correct errors due to constraints which also evolve. The issue of last mile delivery is conducive to new projects supported by large retailers trying to win the market and the hearts of individuals. It is not uncommon to come across these small city trucks which stop at the bottom of intramural buildings. The observation is clear, the urban network is saturated and home delivery does not help. Ideas abound to control urban traffic and user safety. For example, with the increasingly frequent testing of drone deliveries. The year 2019 will be marked by the first delivery of an organ for transplant, in the United States. It is recalled that 4 % of organs taken for transplantation undergo excursions and delays which are very high risk factors for their maintenance. This is the reason why various experiments have been authorized and continue to take place in some cities in Australia and the United States.

France is also innovating to develop the logistics sector and, particularly, to guarantee compliance with transport conditions. Koovea is one of them, the Montpellier start-up has developed a fully connected solution to monitor the cold chain from end to end and guarantee the viability of sensitive products such as: foodstuffs, medicinal products, analysis samples and research.

Read all the « Expert opinion » articles on the SprintProject blog

The sectors and actors concerned The agri-food sector, along with the health sector, are the main sectors concerned by the cold chain.
