According to Forbes, more than 90,000 startups make up the global collaborative economy market. In 2013, the sector's turnover was estimated at 20 billion euros. It is expected to reach 302 billion euros by 2025, which represents an average annual growth rate of +36.4 % and a multiplication of the market by more than 20 in 10 years. At the same time, 89% of the French population declares having used collaborative consumption at least once 1.

The collaborative model, which is based on the sharing or exchange of goods, services or knowledge between individuals via an exchange platform, now seems well anchored in the consumption habits of the French. The collaborative economy now pervades all areas of daily life: food shopping, transport, fashion, childcare.

The collaborative economy is revolutionizing the way we shop. It transforms the relationship between distribution players and their customers. The challenge is then to offer a “seamless” consumption experience, without constraints. Freedom, flexibility, quality are the key words of this underlying trend which is oriented towards the needs of consumers.

The collaborative economy complements the service offering of stores, by offering a better customer experience which is characterized by a saving of time (simplicity, speed) and/or money.

Collaborative drive-to-home delivery is a good example. It thus appears to be THE solution best suited to meeting the challenges posed by last mile delivery. This last link in the chain is often the main factor in customer satisfaction or dissatisfaction. For the majority of them, delivery is the most important criterion when purchasing online.

Collaborative delivery, through its flexibility and speed, is the service that best meets the expectations of e-shoppers

According to the latest study by the Capgemini Research Institute entitled “ The Last-Mile Delivery Challenge”, almost three-quarters (73%) of consumers favor the ability to choose a flexible delivery time slot over fast delivery. Only 19% of companies place flexibility as a priority. Collaborative delivery makes it possible to meet, at the same time, this dual requirement.

It also frees food retail players from infrastructure costs and increases their capacity to deliver to several customers at the same time; what a truck cannot do for example.

For their part, specialized retail players are turning to collaborative delivery to complete their e-commerce offering. It is an alternative to delivery to relay points and in-store collections which are not always the most flexible for consumers. It also makes it possible to broaden the range of products offered for delivery (apart from large volumes), to improve the delivery of products in cities (in particular for outlying stores), to encourage the act of purchasing last minute and gain delivery time ( H+1 to H+3 ).

Finally, local commerce players are choosing collaborative home delivery because they see it as a way to boost city center businesses.

Now, with the integration of collaboration, a distributor can gain between 20 and 30% new customers. The share of the delivery activity in its overall e-commerce turnover then represents, depending on its degree of maturity, between 15 to 29%.

All the retail segments mentioned have one thing in common: the desire to make each store a high-performance e-commerce platform, by deploying a home delivery service without infrastructure costs, with a positive social and environmental impact while resisting the attacks of pure-play players like Amazon or Alibaba .

Collaborative delivery also benefits distributors who can then hope to gain

Collaborative drive-to-home delivery allows the distributor to offer their customers an additional “service”, at a time when home delivery has become a “standard” act of household consumption in France, notably thanks to the development of delivery on the general e-commerce offer.

This additional service is appreciated by consumers who thus remain loyal to their brand. Indeed, according to the Capgemini Research Institute study, 74% of customers satisfied with their delivery method plan to spend 12% more with their usual distributors. Additionally, the majority of customers (82%) share their positive experience with friends and family.

The sharing economy, a social phenomenon

Faced with innovations pushing for the automation of last mile delivery methods (delivery by drone in particular), the social bond defended by the model of the sharing economy meets with adaptants.

Thus, still according to the latest study by Capgemini Research, 55% of consumers say they are ready to make deliveries to residents in their neighborhood. For 64% of them, the person who makes the delivery is not an important criterion, whether it is a store employee, a private person or a third-party carrier. They are in fact 79% saying they are ready to ensure these deliveries for a lower price than that currently offered by distributors.

1 – https://www.economie.gouv.fr/entreprises/chiffres-cles-economie-collaborative?language=fr

Read all the « Expert Opinion » articles on the SprintProject blog

The collaborative economy is on the rise.
