The focus is on APIs. These application interfaces which are exposed on the Cloud in order to make all the services unimaginable. It's simple, it's practical and it's generally effective. So where is the problem? Firstly, I would say on dependence. Most of these APIs are specific and using them means being bound by their availability and conditions. So, of course, this dependence is more or less serious. Take for example a background map API, if you choose Google, it will not be difficult to switch to Bing or OpenStreetMap for example. On the other hand, if you use APIs like Visage de Azur (face recognition) or Google Cloud Machine Learning Engine (machine learning) to name just two, then you will develop a very strong dependence on these providers. Besides the fact that your concept must have much greater added value than the APIs you use, otherwise, what is the point of your concept? This dependence can quickly cause problems in terms of business with your customers, availability and levels of services and development constraints to follow API updates, etc. By the way, the operators of these APIs have every interest in making you addicted and they do it well. In short, independence is over.

But is it really serious? If you choose your suppliers carefully, you know that they will not disappear anytime soon, that they will continue to bring you developments and value to your projects, etc. A whole bunch of good reasons to continue using them… keeping in mind that this dependence is a technical but also a business risk. If a large part of the value of your project is produced by an API, then know that others will be able to do as well as you using the same APIs...

We come back to trying to place a cursor in the best place between independence, ease and without forgetting the development costs to arrive at the level of these APIs. Personally, I admit to being a little opposed to it since these APIs constitute too large a part of the value of the projects without however calling into question that without them, certain projects would be impossible for startups or even SMEs.

In the end, obviously, there is no miracle answer... but keep in mind that even if these APIs are offered by large companies, they also mean that you no longer control your projects at 100%.

Read all the « Techno » articles on the SprintProject blog

For a startup, using the Cloud is natural since its first virtue is to offer services easily and at relatively low cost if we take into account all its advantages.
